MOAI LABS aims to promote business investment in innovative solutions to combat loneliness, creating the FIRST EUROPEAN TRANSNATIONAL LIVING LAB SPECIALISED IN LONELINESS AND OPEN INNOVATION, thanks to the integration of “Experts by Experience” (older adults who have the need), “Early Demand Groups” and potential buyers (demand), and the environment (Community), which will ensure the solutions are adopted to reduce the loneliness of the elderly, increase their connections and their empowerment.

The MOAI LABS project is co-funded by the Interreg Sudoe Programme through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The MOAI LABS project is looking for innovative solutions to help older adults who feel unwanted loneliness to make them feel less lonely or socially isolated. The MOAI LABS partners are proposing two challenges to be solved with innovative approaches:

CHALLENGE 1: CONNECT

Digitally enabled community to support older adults in fighting social isolation and loneliness

The aim is to help older adults who feel unwanted loneliness to feel less lonely or socially isolated by increasing their meaningful social connections in a community enabled by digital technologies.

CHALLENGE 2: ACTIVATE

Innovative solutions that support older adults in staying healthy through physical and/or cognitive activities

The aim is to promote physical activity and cognitive stimulation, the solution could lead to personalised plans according to the users’ needs and their preferences.

BENEFITS IF AWARDED

What advantages does MOAI LABS offer to the winners of each challenge?

An Evaluation Committee will select the best proposed solution for each challenge . The awarded proposals will enter an acceleration and co-creation programme delivered by MOAI LABS partners to fine-tune their solution and accelerate their go-to-market strategy. It will run from April to December 2022.

In addition, each selected innovative proposal will get a €17.000 voucher to spend in external services of their choice that boost the commercialization and uptake of their solution in the market.

If a single proposal is awarded both challenges for a global solution, the voucher will amount up to €34.000.

Acceleration programme

Acceleration Program organized in several sessions throughout 2022 that include mentoring, intensive training and digital training. These sessions will have different themes: social innovation, business modeling, digital enabling technologies and maker philosophy.

Co-creation

Co-creation of the awarded entities will have the possibility of working with the 5 living labs  located in Spain. France and Portugal, (Fundación Intras, Leitat, Mutualité Française Limousine, Universidad de Aveiro e i2ml). The products and services generated will be tested through participatory innovation (co-creation) with Experts by Experience in a real environment. This method provides a large amount of information that allows to achieve a final result appropriate to the needs and expectations.

Go-to-market

In addition, each winning proposal will obtain a GO-TO-MARKET voucher of € 17,000 for external services, with the aim of promoting the commercialization and acceptance of the solution in the market. This voucher will allow the winning entities to choose those providers that best suit their needs and that make it easier for them to integrate the proposed solution into the market.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The call will be open until the 7th of March 2022 at 17.00h Brussels time.

All applicants must submit their application via the online form[1]

Only online applications in English will be considered.

The applicants must follow the application form provided for this purpose in the MOAI LABS website and the declaration of honour duly signed by the applicant(s).

[1] Applicants must be aware that the online form has a size constraint for the uploaded documents. Each document cannot exceed 10 MB.

WHO CAN APPLY? IN A NUTSHELL

  • The applicants must participate as a single entity or in consortia (up to three entities).
  • The single entity applicant must be an enterprise. Other types of organisations such as research organisations or foundations are excluded.
  • In a consortium, at least one member of the group must be an enterprise. Therefore, other participants such as research organisations or foundations can participate as long as an enterprise is part of their consortium.
  • Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 or higher is required.
  • The applicants must be based in the SUDOE area.
  • The applicants must submit proposals to ONE of the MOAI challenges (CONNECT or ACTIVATE), or a global solution that tackles BOTH CHALLENGES (CONNECT + ACTIVATE).

FAQs

Do you accept single or joint applications (consortia)?

The applicants must participate as a single entity or in consortia. If the applicants participate in consortia, they must group UP to three entities (i.e., only two participants are also a valid possibility) and appoint a lead partner that acts as coordinator on behalf of the rest.

The single entity applicant must be an enterprise. An enterprise is any entity engaged in an economic activity directed towards the market, irrespective of its size (micro, small, medium, large) and its legal form. Therefore, other types of organisations such as research organisations or foundations are excluded.  In a consortium, at least one member of the group must be an enterprise. Therefore, other participants such as research organisations or foundations can participate as long as an enterprise is part of their consortium.

What is the theme of this call for projects?

MOAI Challenges are looking for innovative solutions to help older adults who feel unwanted loneliness to make them feel less lonely or socially isolated.

The proposed innovative solutions must solve the two MOAI CHALLENGES defined by the MOAI LABS consortium.

Challenge 1: CONNECT

Digitally enabled community to support older adults in fighting social isolation and loneliness

Challenge 2: ACTIVATE

Innovative solutions that support older adults in staying healthy through physical and/or cognitive activities

How are projects evaluated?

The Evaluation Committee will evaluate each proposal according to a grid consisting of a quantitative score for each evaluation criteria:

How does the selection process work?

An internal reviewer from the MOAI LABS consortium will perform an initial eligibility check. If the eligibility criteria are met, the proposal goes into the evaluation process.

Initial evaluation of projects will be done by a Project Team, composed of a select team of External Reviewers who have knowledge and/or experience in innovative solutions for older adults.

Each proposal is evaluated by two external reviewers, who review and score the proposal individually according to the evaluation criteria. Then, virtual consensus meetings will be scheduled where the scorings are shortly discussed between the reviewers that will help in the ranking of the applications.

All the applicants will be contacted to announce the results of the call and will be notified whether they have been awarded or not.

How can I apply?

We only consider applications written in English. You were asked to provide descriptions, detailed project plans and budget information in our online application form as well as accept the Declaration of honour.

Is it necessary to have a Google account to apply?

Yes, it is necessary to have an active google account (Gmail) to be able to fill in the data on the application form and submit the proposal.

What information is required for my application?

Both applications (application form and declaration of honour) must be sent in .pdf format and signed by legal representative of the applicant organisation where needed (in consortia, only the lead partner must sign the application form, but all partners mus sign the declaration of honour). Applicants must be aware that the online form has a size constraint for the uploaded documents. Each document cannot exceed 10 MB.

Will every application be reviewed?

Yes, we will review all eligible applications received by the application deadline.

How can I solve my questions?

Questions related to the call must be sent through the following form

MOAI LABS partners will do their best to provide an answer 7 working days after receiving the question.

Questions can be sent, at latest, until the 21st of February 2022 and, therefore, MOAI LABS partners will provide the final answers by the 28th of February 2022.

How many applications can I submit?

The applicants must submit proposals to ONE of the MOAI challenges (CONNECT or ACTIVATE), or a global solution that tackles BOTH CHALLENGES (CONNECT + ACTIVATE).

Only organisations based in the SUDOE area can apply. Which regions are included in the SUDOE area?

Should the requesting entities belong to the SUDOE area?

In the case of individual proposals, the company must belong to the SUDOE area. In the case of consortium proposals, at least one of the entities must belong to the SUDOE area. However, the development, results and impact of the solution will only be displayed in the SUDOE space.

Should the awarded companies be present o travel to the living labs?

The awarded companies will not have to travel to all the living labs. It will be the MOAI LABS partners who will conduct the sessions in the living labs with the experts by experience (older adults) to test the solutions.  
The awarded companies will have to stay in touch remotely with the MOAI LABS partners to discuss how the solution has to be fine-tuned with the feedback of the experts by experience. In addition, all the sessions of the acceleration programme will be organised remotely.

Do the contracted external consultancy services have to meet any specific requirements?

External consultancy services do not have to meet any specific requirements. They must be services that improve, complement or help in the development of the solution. They can also be market placement services. The proposal must indicate the added value that these services bring to the proposed solution.

How many sessions will be held within the acceleration program and when will they take place?

Information about the acceleration programme can be found in the Call for Solutions document, section 3.1.2. The services will be led by subject-matter experts from the MOAI LABS consortium and will take place between April 2022 and December 2022: Innovation on loneliness and isolation: 2 sessions led by I2ML, UAVR, and MFL.

  • Social innovation: 1 session led by LEITAT and INTRAS

  • Digital enabling technologies: 3 sessions led by INOV
  • Maker philosophy: 2 Sessions led by FUNGE

Are proposals with a scanned signature valid?

They are not. Only certified electronic signatures are allowed. Scanned signatures are not valid. Therefore, if you have already submitted your application and you did not use a valid electronic signature, we urge you to resubmit it following this requirement to ensure that you pass the eligibility criteria, or your application will not be accepted.
